Excerpts from the Conversation

Pandemic & Opportunity

NUSO: You started your TeamLogic IT business three years ago, is that correct?

Heather Pelton: Yes, that's right. I started it right after coming out of COVID. That period was an interesting time for everything we were doing. We talked to a few franchise owners, and one of them had started right in the middle of COVID. He said he did great.

Meanwhile, in the IT world, we noticed a lot of companies rushing to move their operations to the cloud, but many of them did it poorly. Afterward, we found ourselves cleaning up those setups—fixing remote work systems that weren’t secure or functional.

NUSO: Are you seeing a shift in how your clients approach remote work? What percentage would you say are fully remote versus hybrid versus fully in-office?

Heather Pelton: When I started, most of my customers were on-premise. None of them were completely in the cloud. But as of next week, 100% of my customers will be fully cloud-based. We’re currently wrapping up a big project to transition a major client.

NUSO: What drove that transition? Was it your guidance, or were there other factors at play?

Heather Pelton: It’s a bit of both. During our initial discovery meetings with clients, we often discuss the benefits of the cloud—its versatility, mobility, and so on. Initially, they’re hesitant and usually say, "Nope, we don’t want to do that."

For example, we worked with a law firm where one of the named partners was planning a trip to Europe. He asked us to move just his system to the cloud so he could work remotely. When he came back, he said, “Do the whole company.”

After that, they saw how much easier it was compared to using VPNs or remote desktop connections to machines at the office. They realized the inefficiency of their old setup, and the switch made sense.

NUSO: Why do you think there’s initial resistance to moving to the cloud? Is it just fear of change?

Heather Pelton: Absolutely, people don’t like change. That’s a universal truth. But in IT, change is constant—that’s literally what we do. Some clients are still running on ancient technology, like 2012 servers, which are outdated and insecure.

One client even said, "We bought this 25 years ago, and it still works." Sure, it might still run, but it doesn’t work well.

When hardware stops receiving updates, the risks start to pile up—security vulnerabilities, compatibility issues with newer technology, and so on. Eventually, the pain of staying with the old system outweighs the discomfort of upgrading.

IT & Communications Security Concerns

NUSO: Speaking of security, how often does that become the driving factor in these decisions?

Heather Pelton: Very often. As hardware ages, the security risks increase exponentially. Older equipment opens up a wider threat vector, and that can be a huge liability for companies. Even if I don’t explicitly "sell" the cloud, its benefits—better security, easier management—tend to sell themselves. For most businesses, staying on outdated systems just isn’t sustainable anymore.

NUSO: It sounds like your clients deal with a wide range of challenges. Can you share more about the types of businesses you work with?

Heather Pelton: Absolutely. I have clients across various industries. For instance, I work with a SOC 2-compliant company, and we're currently doing an audit for them. We’ve also worked with clients dealing with Department of Defense (DOD) compliance, which is super fun.

To stay ahead, we maintain compliance at the highest levels, like NIST standards, because every piece of the system—every spoke in the wheel—is important.

NUSO: How do you approach security for these clients?

Heather Pelton: I offer a bundled approach to security that isn’t optional. It includes everything necessary to ensure the highest level of protection. We use a Security Operations Center (SOC) to monitor desktops and detect anomalies across the network. Both securing the desktop and identifying unusual activity are critical.

We also deploy specific tools to secure emails and prevent breaches. For example, one of our clients was the financial officer of a company. She was working from home when our SOC flagged and cut off her internet connection. It turned out her son had "modded" his Xbox—I'm not fluent in gamer speak, but essentially, he tampered with the security features. Hackers exploited this to access the home network, which put her financial data at risk.

We quickly stepped in to clean up the situation and removed the compromised device from the network. Of course, there was a lot of explaining involved. She ended up yelling at her son for putting her—and the company—at risk. He was just a kid and didn’t realize the implications of his actions. But any time you bypass the security on a device, it’s like leaving the doors and windows wide open for anyone to come in.

NUSO: Sounds like security and cleanup are recurring themes in your work. Can you tell me more about the cleanup you’ve done for poor cloud implementations?

Heather Pelton: Definitely. Many businesses rushed into the cloud during COVID without fully understanding how to do it securely or effectively. It’s one thing to move to the cloud, but it’s another to do it right. A lot of our work involves going in after the fact to fix poorly implemented systems, ensuring they’re secure, functional, and set up to meet the specific needs of the business.
